Payment Methods

Both sites offer the ability to buy and sell cryptocurrency with bank transfers & wires.

However, Coinbase also allows you to make purchases with debit cards and credit cards. Additionally, Coinbase allows you to sell cryptocurrency in exchange for PayPal funds.

Supported Cryptocurrencies

Coinbase supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash.

Gemini only supports Bitcoin and Ethereum.

User Experience and Beginner Friendliness

Overall, we’re big fans of the user experience on both Coinbase and Gemini. The two sites do however function a bit differently.

Coinbase works more like a cryptocurrency store, than it does a traditional exchange. Instead of having you trade with other users on an exchange, Coinbase directly facilitates users’ buy and sell orders.

Coinbase Credit Card Buy 1

This comes with a few major advantages:

  • All that’s required to place a buy order on Coinbase is to choose your cryptocurrency and the amount of it you want to buy. The price and fees will be clearly displayed at the time of your order.
  • Purchases made via credit card are completed instantly, allowing you to immediately send the cryptocurrency you purchased.
  • For some users, purchases made through bank accounts are also instant. This is a new feature of Coinbase, that’s being slowly unveiled.
    • If you are not eligible for instant buys with a bank account, your purchase price will be locked in when you place your order. You’ll then received the specified amount of cryptocurrency in a few days. This can be beneficial if you expect prices to go up.

You can see the full process for buying cryptocurrency on Coinbase in our Coinbase Review.

Gemini works more similarly to the way most traditional cryptocurrency exchanges do.

After setting up and verifying your account, you’ll first need to deposit onto the exchange. Once your deposited has been cleared by Gemini, you can then use your deposited funds to trade on their exchange.

Gemini Deposit Via Bank Transfer

If using a bank wire (no deposit limit amount), you’ll need to wait until your wire has been fully processed before being able to trade. This usually takes 1-2 business days, although it depends on your bank.

If using an ACH transfer from your bank ($500 daily limit), your funds will be immediately available to trade with. However, you can’t withdraw any purchased cryptocurrency until your ACH transfer has been fully processed. This usually takes 4-5 business days.

Gemini’s exchange is relatively straight forward to use. You can see the full process for buying cryptocurrency on Gemini in our Gemini Review.

Trust and Security

Both Coinbase and Gemini are well trusted in the cryptocurrency community.

Coinbase was launched in 2012 and is based out of San Francisco, California. Since their launch, they’ve hit some huge milestones:

  • 10+ million customers.
  • $50+ billion worth of cryptocurrency exchanged.
  • $200+ million raised in venture capital funding from investors like Y Combinator, Alexis Ohanian (Reddit Co-Founder), Blockchain Capital, Union Square Ventures, and many more. The company is now valued at over $1.5 billion.

Coinbase also leads the industry in the security and insurance of customer funds.

  • All customer funds are held separately from company funds.
  • 98% of cryptocurrency funds are held in secure offline cold storage, while the remaining 2% in “hot wallets” are fully insured.
  • U.S. customers USD funds are FDIC insured up to a maximum of $250,000.

As is the case for all cryptocurrency exchanges, you’re still on the hook for keeping your personal account safe. With that said, Coinbase offers more features than most competitors to help you secure your account, including:

  • 2-Factor Authentication passcodes through SMS text, Google Authenticator, or Authy.
  • Time delayed withdrawals and multiple approvers through the “Coinbase Vault”.
  • Required verification for new devices attempting to use log into your account.

Coinbase is also fully compliant with all laws and regulations in the jurisdictions where they operate.

Gemini was launched in 2015 and is based out of New York. The company was founded by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss.

Gemini follows industry best security standards for handling customer funds, including:

  • All customer funds are held separately from company funds.
  • The majority of cryptocurrency funds are held in secure offline cold storage.
  • USD funds are eligible for FDIC insurance.

Gemini offers 2-factor authentication through SMS and Authy to help you secure your account. Gemini is also fully compliant with all laws and regulations where they operate.

Fees

Gemini does not charge any deposit or withdrawal fees for cryptocurrency or USD.

For trading on the exchange, Gemini uses a dynamic maker-taker fee schedule, which you can learn more about here. To put it simply, you’ll be paying 1.0% or less when making trades on Gemini.

Coinbase charges ~1.49% for buy and sell orders made through a bank account and ~3.99% for purchases with a credit card.

It’s worth noting, when you create a Coinbase account, you can pair it with their GDAX exchange. GDAX offers fees starting trading fees far lower than Gemini. You can learn more about this in our Coinbase vs GDAX article.

Customer Support

As a whole, cryptocurrency exchanges have room for improvement when it comes to customer support. As prices and demand from investors have spiked in the last couple years, all major exchanges have been struggling to scale their customer support. With that said, we’ve found Coinbase and Gemini to be handling this better than most.

Both exchanges primarily use email to handle their customer support, although Coinbase has recently added phone support for some matters.

Coinbase vs Gemini Summary

Overall, both Coinbase and Gemini are great places to buy and sell cryptocurrency.

Coinbase supports a couple more cryptocurrencies than Gemini (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash) and is overall a bit easier to use. It’s also the only option of the two that lets you make purchases via credit and debit cards.

Gemini slightly beats Coinbase in terms of fees, while being slightly more complicated to use. It only offers trading for Bitcoin and Ethereum.
